RARE! Antique Hand Painted Cylinder Music Box 1800s NR!
This auction is for an antique cylinder music box. This beauty belonged to the present owners great grandfather, Benjamin Whitfield Griffith, who lived on a plantation in northern Mississippi and aquired this music box in the early 1800s. The box winds smoothly and plays well. There seems to be 4 different tunes that it will play. All teeth appear to be present and undamaged. The cylinder measures 7 7/8" wide. The box measures 12" wide x 4 1/4" deep x 3 3/8" tall. There are no makers marks visible, but there is the number 5630 stamped into the brass. There are different hand painted flowers found on each side of the box. The top at one time depicted two scenes which are now rather difficult to discern. There is also writing on the lower edge of the top, but it is very difficult to read (see close-up photos). The inside of the top has a handwritten quote in a combination of French and Italian which seems to indicate it is Swiss in origin (Switzerland has a large concentration of French, Italian, and German speakers). The quote references William Tell and Rossini. There is part of a label still on the bottom, but not very readable. One hinge is a bit bent so the top does not sit on snugly. The key is not original. We have no reserve price on this auction, so don't miss your chance to bid!
