Antique Brass Queen & Co Surveyors Compass + Tripod NR!
This auction is for a beautiful antique brass surveyor's compass made by Queen & Company. According to our research, this instrument was made in the mid to late 1800s. It's stamped on the face "Queen & Co Makers Phila 6654" and the same number (6654) is found on the top of the tripod and the top of the case. The compass measures approximately 14.25" inches by 6.5" inches by 10.5" inches tall. It comes in the original wooden box which measures about 14.75" inches wide, 7.75" inches deep, and 6" inches tall. There are two clasps and a lock on the front and four feet on the bottom. There is no key for the lock, and there is a small chip on the back top corner of the box. The tripod measures 41" inches long when closed, and has carved wooden legs with a brass top and metal feet. Also contained in the box are two plumb bobs, a roll of Hudson steel tape, a folding tool, and a smaller surveyor's compass. The smaller compass is stamped on the lid "A.E. Covelle & Co. Boston." There is also a smaller stamp below that but it is difficult to decipher. When the small compass is closed, a brass lever lifts up to stop the needles from moving. The compass measures approximately 3.5" inches in diameter. It has a leather cradle made to fit on top of a pole or tripod. The tool is stamped "David Dominicus & Co Remscheid 540." It measures approximately 7.75" inches long when open and 4.75" inches when closed. The tape has been removed from the leather case.
