Signed Mel Hunter Lithograph Night Owls Bird Print NR

This listing is for a wonderful hand signed lithograph by the artist Mel Hunter (1927-2004). The title of this print is "Night Owls" and it is number 116 of only 300 produced. It's difficult to show in photos how lovely this lithograph looks in person. This piece is a companion print to "Great Horned Owls" which we also currently have for sale on eBay. The artist's signature is found in the lower right hand corner. Mel first became well known as a science fiction and technical illustrator before moving to Vermont and focusing on the natural world around him. The print is in excellent condition. Edition printed in sixteen custom colors plus three passes of black on Rives Heavyweight white paper, plus hand-coloring of the white stars. This image is a companion piece to Great Horned Owls. 14 separate drawings in graphite and black acrylic on Mylar were made by the artist. When Mel was printing the daytime version of the image, it occurred to him that it might be possible to run a companion edition of the same subject in a night version, printed on black Arches paper, using opaque-based inks to create a moonlit scene. For various technical reasons it proved impossible to run black paper through the 28 x 40 Heidelberg press, so the deep black background of the night was created by running three consecutive solid black edge-to-edge inkings. This produced a marvelous surface for the opaque inks.
