Rare Antique 1870s-1890s Hand Sewn Quilt Sawtooth Square 77" x 75" W/ Provenance
This listing is for a beautiful antique quilt in a sawtooth square variation pattern. According to the included provenance, it was hand quilted in the 1870s to 1890s by Hannah M. Cressey, a blind woman born in Jamaica, Vermont in 1824 to Alpheus and Lydia Cressey. She was also the great-aunt of the seller. The quilt appears in two different books about quilting. One is from 1991 and titled, Plain and Fancy: Vermont's People and their Quilts as a Reflection of America by Richard L. Cleveland and Donna Bister. The other book is from 1995 and titled, Gatherings: America's Quilt Heritage by Paul D. Pilgrim and Gerald E. Roy. (Neither book is included with the quilt). The quilt is in very good condition with some discoloration which is mostly on the edges. There are no holes, tears or odors that we can find. It measures approximately 77" inches by 75" inches and has a piece of fabric stitched to the back in order to hang it up for display.
