This listing is for a lovely pair of antique watercolor paintings. The artist's name appears to be W.R. Thomas and the date appears to be 1887. After extensive research on the artist, we weren't able to locate much information. The pieces have a kind of Asian style which would make sense, as we're told the paintings may have belonged to Mark Tennien, a Marian Knoll priest who served in China and Japan prior to Communism. He went on to write a book about his experience titled "No Secret Is Safe behind the Bamboo Curtain." It was published in 1952 by Farrar, Straus & Young in New York. Mark's brother was monsignor William Tennien, the founder of St. Mark's in Burlington, Vermont. The paintings themselves are in good condition overall with yellowing and foxing. The frames have scuffs and wear and the backing paper is brittle and has a few tears. There is a label on the back of each painting from S.W. Raymond, a framer in Poughkeepsie, New York.
