"Landscape painting is my way of bearing witness to the place where I grew up and have chosen to remain. As the old saying goes, 'if you don???t like the weather in Vermont ??? just wait a minute.' Although a particular palette dominates much of my work ??? shimmering summer-time greens rising to skies of adamantine blue ??? this pastoral landscape changes dramatically when the mercury drops way below freezing and the Canadian wind blows down through the Champlain Islands. The sun sets low in the winter sky, revealing the ages-old pageant of the zodiac arcing across the northern heavens. Life itself is such a pageant. Like my father and grandfather, both 'old-timers', there is a quiet dignity to this land that over a lifetime molds the people who have lived here. The spirit of a place is often evoked by its atmosphere: the sun???s warmth combining with the living breath of the land to achieve harmony. My own painting endeavor, an instrument to suggest this atmosphere, is simply another voice for the music."
