Rare Vtg Antique Hanging Metal Peacock Church Sanctuary Altar Oil Lamp England
This listing is for a rare Antique Metal Hanging Church Lamp. The hanging chains are attached to the crowns of three peacocks. Our clients father-in-law was a Canadian soldier in WWII and brought this back from England after the war. It has the remnants of a sticker from British Antiquities to make sure it was not melted down during the war when they needed metal. We were unable to find anything quite like this online. The small lid may be lead, as it's very soft. This piece measures about 6 inches tall from the very bottom to the top of the peacock crowns. Including the chain, it is about 27 inches. The lamp is in good overall condition with some scratches and dings from age. There is some damage to the lid, and it looks like one of the peacocks may have come off and been re-attached at one time. Please see the detailed photos below and contact us with any questions before bidding. We have a low opening bid, so don't miss your chance to add this rare piece to your collection!
Some additional information thanks to Jon the Bishop: "this is a hanging Eucharistic lamp, which would have hung before an altar. There would have been a hanging piece in the hole in the bottom (almost always a cross). The busts are peacocks, which symbolize eternal life in Christian art, a fitting reference to the Bread of Life of the reserved Eucharist. The central well would have held a (red) glass holder for the wick and oil."
