This listing is for a pair of rare posters advertising the 1968 Documenta 4 art exhibition in Kassel, Germany. There were two versions of this poster made with reversed colors. We are selling both versions together, and they look wonderful next to each other. These are original posters, not modern reproductions. They come from the archives of a long time poster collector who lived in Switzerland for many years. The posters measure about 23 x 33 inches. They are in very good condition with some minor creasing and edge wear. The posters have crease lines from being folded at one time. Please see the detailed photos below, and contact us with any questions before bidding. Don't miss your chance to add these rare posters to your collection!
During the Third Reich, Germany was cut off from current developments in the international art word. To reestablish that connection, Arnold Bode, a professor at the art academy in Kassel, organized the first "documenta" exhibition, which opened there in 1955. The "documenta" exhibition subsequently developed into the most important exhibition of contemporary avant-garde art in Germany (and arguably the entire world); it is now held every five years. Bode received the German Federal Cross of Merit in 1974.
The "documenta IV" exhibition, the first ever to turn a profit, drew large crowds. It featured a selection of Pop Art, Minimal Art, and Kinetic Art that intrigued visitors and roused critics, some of whom spoke of a "modern house of horrors."
