Original Edward Curtis Photo On Japanese Tissue 1906 Alchise Apache Indian Chief

This listing is for a rare original Edward Curtis Photogravure printed on Japanese tissue. It is titled 'Alchise - Apache' and is a stunning portrait of an Apache Chief. Based on our research, it is from Volume 1 of 'The North American Indian'. Below the photo it reads, 'From Copyright Photograph 1906 by E.S. Curtis'. This print was purchased at at Vilunya Diskin's Folk Art Store in Boston in the 1960s. It is in very good overall condition with a tiny white spot towards the edge of his hair (see photos). The print itself measures 4.75" x 7.375" inches and the paper measures about 9.5" x 12.5" inches. The tissue is no longer attached to the backing paper in the upper right and lower left corners. Alchesay (aka William Alchesay and Alchisay, 1853–1928) was a chief of the White Mountain Apache tribe and an Indian Scout. He received the United States military's highest decoration for bravery, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Indian Wars. He tried to convince Geronimo to surrender peacefully on behalf of the United States government and remained friends with Geronimo until his death. After the wars were over he returned him to his wives and became a rancher and was active in Indian affairs.
