This listing is for the book The War Paintings of Claggett Wilson with Appreciations by Alexander Woollcott and Henry McBride. It was published in 1928 by J.H. Sears & Company, Inc. in New York. The book contains twenty-four color plates. It does not come with the dust jacket. The cover has foxing and discolorations. The inside front cover has some blue smudges. Some of the pages have one or more small spots. Most if not all of the prints are loose or no longer attached. The book measures about 17" by 15" by 3/4". "Wilson was one of America’s first 'Modernist' painters. Early in his career (1915), he was a teacher of painting and drawing at Columbia University. Serving as a Lieutenant in the first World War, Wilson returned from France (1919) to document his experiences in his highly acclaimed war paintings for which he was recommended for the Nobel Prize. The book contains 24 color plates printed by “The Societe Anonyme Des Arts Graphiques.” The 24 color plates are in various sizes (many 14.7x17”) and mounted to the right-hand page. Titles appear on the left. Many of the illustrations are dynamic, horrific and brilliant, some all at the same time [...] The hardcover book is bound in linen buckram with a [...] gold luster embossed center [...[ The front of the book has two essays of appreciation by Alexander Wollcott and Henry McBride. [...]"
