Antique 1868 Letter Andrew Johnson Impeachment Trial Knox Lincoln Maine Railroad
This listing is for a rare Antique Letter written on April 23, 1868. It was written to John Warden from his father in Rockland, Maine. The letter tells of many family memebers, as well as of other business and personal happenings in Rockland. One fantastic section refers to the "considerable excitement" about the "trial by impeachment of our President for High Misdemeanors". It goes on to mention Chief Justice Chase and the question about who would be president after the trial (Johnson, Wade, or Colfax). He writes that the "country awaits anxiously" for the results of the trial, and that the next presidential candidate is sure to be US Grant. Another part of the letter talks about the establishment of the Knox to Lincoln Railroad and lists officers of the new company that were chosen. There is quite a bit of railroad details, as well as some talk about expanding the port for ships. The letter is 6 pages long and measures about 5" x 8" inches. It is in very good condition with some creasing and discoloration. Please see the detailed photos below and contact us with any questions before bidding.
