September 15, 1916.
Hon. Josephus Daniels,
Secretary of the Navy, Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. Secretary:-
I am in receipt of your very kind letter of the 12th and thank you for your kind expressions of good will.
The election here was certainly a surprise to all of us. The Republicans expected nothing of that sort. There was nothing in the campaign to indicate such a landslide. The Progressives went over to the Republicans almost in a body, and in addition the Republicans got out their stay-at-home vote almost to a man. This latter was unprecedented. We got out all the votes that we could possibly expect. In my District I received the largest vote I ever obtained in any of the preceding elections. I cannot, for the life of me, see what it was that brought out in such a phenomenal way the Republican reserve vote. Their vote this year is much larger than the combined Republican and Progressive vote of two years ago. We all thought, and so did they, that the best they could expect was to get a vote equal to that of the Republican and Progressive vote of the last election. Of course, they had all the money they wanted and I am sure they used it lavishly. They bought everything they could lay their hands on and paid effective workers doing missionary work on the quiet for the purpose of getting out the stay-at-home vote. In addition they promised everything to the Progressives. They have won, but in my judgment it is a dearly bought victory. It will be utterly impossible for them to carry out the barters and trades which they have made, and, in my judgment, the result will be that they will be split. wide open in two years. But that does not help us any for the present. I care not so much about the effect of the election on our Maine matters because we will recover all right, but I am afraid of its moral effect on the rest of the country and especially in those states where the Progressive vote is considerable. However, it is pretty well understood that Maine is a strong Republican state normally and it may have no effect.
2.
We are all deeply grateful to you for the splendid work you did in the campaign. Your meetings at Rockland and Bath did us a great amount of good. We carried both of these cities and they are both normally Republican. I am sure that your work in both cities was a great factor in redeeming them.
I shall certainly be glad to see you at the opening of Congress next winter and sincerely trust that everything will be well in November.
With very great appreciation of your kindness,
I am,
Very truly yours,
D J Mc Gillicuddy
